About me:
I'm Kent Lamm and I've been making short films for over 20 years, starting at age 11. I directed my first feature film, Bad is Bad, in 2010. Made for only $6,000, the film went on to reach over 7 million views and garner critical acclaim. More recently, my short film, Will "The Machine", screened and won awards at film festivals around the world. Released online in 2019, it reached over 3 million views. As an editor, I’ve done work for clients such as Apple, Netflix, and Beats by Dre.

    Good stuff. I want to touch on one point. The line between script and directing. I often run across the problem of identifying the line. Sometimes the writers write too much that is better left to directing and sometimes the director does not follow the script. It is always a challenge to get the right amount into the script. I often tell writers that you put enough detail into the story to tell the story. Do you need to describe what everyone is wearing in a scene? Only if it is important. Otherwise, let wardrobe under the director decide costuming. For instance, in the Tom Hanks movie "The Man with One Red Shoe" obviously he had to wear one red shoe. I tell writers to write enough to tell the story. As for the story, follow the script. All the details should be worked out during preproduction so that you are not having to decide everything on set. As for the purpose of a scene, all that should be discussed in advance. I often see filmmakers shoot a lot of tight shots. No, no, no. Think about the importance of each line. Closeups should be used for important points, not every shot, otherwise you lose the effect of closeups. Imagine a scene where all you saw was closeups. Doesn't work. Design your shots to show what is important in the shot at that point in the scene. He picked up a knife. Okay, shoot the knife being picked up. He grabbed the guard from behind and put the knife to the guard's throat. Okay, a medium closeup. He drew the knife across his throat. Now a closeup. How close though? Just the neck getting sliced? The whole head so you see the guard's face as he dies? Or a bit wider so you see the hero face as he kills him. Perhaps just his face to show the satisfaction.

    Good info! One thing tho, please do not record to your camera’s audio and use it as a main source😅that is a big no no in production. There’s many inexpensive ways to record audio today that would make ur projects pop. I’m a one man band often and can’t mix all the time so I needed reliable audio to have when I shoot. Camera audio is the weakest form of audio u can use. And is mainly just used for syncing or the occasional background ambience for certain things

    Everything is cliche at this point. There are about a handful of shots a decade that are original. Just storyboard whatever cliche that comes to mind and note that you want to change it later. Then onsite find a way to use the uniqueness of the environment to make it a better shot.

    Hi Kent! The movie had me riveted. Yes, it could use some trimming, but the story and most of the acting carried me through. Special kudos, of course, to Chris and Kevin. Wow. They're really friends! What a nice touch of reality. It probably explains one of the moments I really liked, when Ray slaps Jesse's palm and Jesse doesn't know how to react. Don't know if you're still reading comments, but I had a few on the film's actual YT page. One shot that impressed me was that vertical crane (in video we'd call it a "pedestal") going up from the ground floor into the attic of the house. It was clean and smooth with no jarring breaks between the resets. I also liked the "Steadicam" shot following the little girl with those cute tap shoes up the stairs, knowing what she was going to find in the attic. Good move not showing her reaction. I could go on. As an author of two novels and many short stories, I have explored writing a screenplay, but probably will leave that to someone else if my books are picked up. I wish you, your crew, cast, and family all the best. Daniel PS "Standard" in your name made me think of the porn photographer at the heart of the book/movie "True Confessions."

  • @KutWrite
    @KutWrite 7 днів тому

    In 2024: Well done!! I hope everyone involved has gone on to better things. The only times the budget showed was when the camera shook when the actors thumped the floor. Your crew and actors definitely earned more than their money's worth. Special kudos to the writer/director/editor. Some trimming could help the slow parts but that's not a major criticism. The acting ranged from OK to 100% believable (Chris & Kevin). I think my favorite scene was when Jesse and Jack try to play the video game. Two unclear parts: When the shower starts up near the end... I'm wondering who was in there. I didn't imagine Jack showering at his age, and we left him playing the video game. Everyone else, one by one, was accounted for. Also, why are there only two kids fishing at the end? There were three in that car, and the one I thought Jesse killed was one of the fishers... so? I'm gonna see if you've done any more films, even shorts on here. I'm an author, so film is an extension of my world and I love "meaty" projects. Don't know if you'll see this having done this project so long ago. Hope so. All the best!

    Don't bother purchasing Small RIG products. They don;t have after sales support, parts to sell, etc. If you misplace something , your whole kit is garbage. I ordered the part from their "customer service", they never shipped it, I inquired about my order, just to receive an email saying that they forgot about my order, ran out of stock and would be "refunding my 360 dollars". Now I have a 950 dollars unusable gear.
